IRIS
IRIS
IRIS is a European standard that has been set up by four leading manufacturers of railways systems: Ansaldo Breda, Bombardier, Siemens and Alstom in accordance with UNIFE (Union of European Railway Industries). The standard, based on ISO 9001 requirements is a sort of ISO/TS 16949 (technical specification for the automobile sector) for companies in the railway sector aiming at the following goals:
  • quality improvement along the supply chain;
  • improved supplier assessment in terms of effectiveness and efficiency;
  • reduced auditing costs thanks to the homogeneous requirements for all equipment manufacturer;
  • reduced risks in the contractual relationship between the parties, thanks to a specific company database, which can be accessed by both equipment manufacturers and companies.
The IRIS certification bodies are accredited directly by UNIFE and the adopted framework is a classical one (optional pre-audit, initial audit, field audit, surveillance every year). Although the adopted framework is traditional, in reality, after the audit, according to a check list with scores, the supplier does not result as being “certified or not”, but falls within a maturity level (there are five in total).
